What is Nature Journaling? 

Nature Journaling is collecting and organizing your observations, connections, questions, and elaborations on the natural world through words, pictures, and numbers. Anyone can nature journal, no matter their skill level and experience!

Materials:

Directions:

  1. Arrange your papers:
    • Top: New Pioneers’ Back Cover Page
    • New Pioneers’ Nature Journaling 101 Page 
    • Bottom: 5 Pieces of Blank Paper
  1. Fold your arranged papers in half horizontally, similarly to a book.
    • Your front cover should be blank, and your back cover should have New Pioneers’ logo on it! 
  1. Use your hole punch to make two holes along the edge of your fold, slightly closer together than the length of your stick.
  1. Place your stick over the two holes and weave your rubberband through to bind the pages together. 
  1. Take your half sheet of paper and fold the outer edges in, meeting in the middle. Tape in place.
    • Make a ½ inch fold from the bottom and tape in place. You now have a pocket! 
  1. Tape your pocket to the inside of the front cover. 
  1. Fold your Zine Card! (Put in the pocket when done)
  2. Decorate your front cover. 
  3. Start journaling!
    • Refer to the “Nature Journaling 101” Page and your Zine Card to start making observations! 
    • Use apps like iNaturalist to help you identify species and learn more about them!
