In 2020, the New Pioneers Earth Day Cleanup Challenge began as a virtual event that invited participants to perform a trash pick-up, take a picture, and then share it with New Pioneers for a chance to win a prize.

An in-person community cleanup event was added to the challenge in 2022, where New Pioneers board and staff worked with volunteers to clean the Springfield Farmers Market Depot and surrounding area, including Road Run Creek.
