This monthly program allows students of color from Bardstown Elementary School to participate in hands-on\, engaging activities that promote the use of STEM (science\, technology\, engineering\, and math) skills\, growing the STEM career field in the future. \n \nThis December\, the STEM program will have a focus on fire science! Activities will include a visit from the Bardstown Fire Department\, experiments about how a fire is created\, and an interactive game about prescribed burns in nature. \nThis is a great opportunity for local students to enrich their after-school experience with a deeper dive into the world of STEM\, helping them realize that learning can be both fun and inspiring!

Save the date for June 23-27\, 2025 from 9 a.m - 4 p.m. at the Loretto Motherhouse for an unforgettable and immersive experience for all 6-12 year olds. \nFrom connecting with the great outdoors to learning environmental stewardship\, this is bound to be a fun-filled and educational week for your little ones! \nRegistration opens on Monday\, February 10th for New Pioneers members\, and Saturday\, February 15th for all non-members. Spots are limited and operate on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nRegistration will close at the end of the day on Friday\, June 13th. Please have all registration forms\, waivers\, and payments submitted by this date.  \nClick here to register today! \nCAMP DESCRIPTION: Do you have a 6-12 year old seeking adventure and outdoor exploration this summer? You’ve come to the right place! “Where the Wild Things Are” Day Camp is the newest nature-focused\, education-rooted summer camp right here in Central Kentucky. A collaboration between New Pioneers for a Sustainable Future and the Loretto Community\, this day camp will immerse your child in a week of curious\, creative\, and hope-filled exploration of diverse natural spaces on the Loretto Motherhouse’s expansive\, nearly 800-acre property. \nWith a goal of growing a new generation of curious\, resilient\, and educated environmental stewards\, ”Where the Wild Things Are” brings your child on daily adventures to “wild spaces” - exploring pond\, native grassland\, forest\, and farm habitats - to seek out “wild things” - the myriad of species that also call our community “home”\, including worms\, birds\, and bugs. Oh my! \nEach day\, youth will gather at the Old Tobacco Barn before splitting into smaller groups rotating between different stations. Activities include: Hiking\, creating natural art\, playing educational nature games\, birding\, scavenger hunts\, observing nature\, wagon rides\, and supervised free play. Get ready for our new\, local summer camp of the year! \nCAMP DETAILS: Camp runs Monday\, June 23 through Friday\, June 27\, 2025 at the Loretto Motherhouse located at 515 Nerinx Rd\, Nerinx\, KY 40049. Camp starts at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m. each day. Early drop off (8 a.m.) and late pick up (5 p.m.) is available during the registration process for an additional fee. \nCamp costs $150 for the full week\, per camper. Active New Pioneers members will receive a pricing discount of $25\, totaling $125 for the full week per camper. Payment is due at registration\, with exceptions for campers with scholarships. The cost of attendance includes participation in all five days of camp\, snacks throughout camp\, learning supplies\, and a camp t-shirt. Lunch is NOT provided - participants will pack a “brown bag” lunch each day of camp. For participants needing early drop off and late pick up\, families pay an additional $25 for each\, which includes early drop off/late pick up for all 5 days of camp (i.e. $50 for both early and late coverage all week). \nIt is a priority of New Pioneers and the Loretto Community that all children have access to “Where the Wild Things Are”. Scholarships are available on a limited basis for those in need. For more information\, email info@newpioneers.org. \nCamp will be held fully outdoors\, rain or shine. In the case of severe weather\, day(s) of camp may be cancelled without refund eligibility. If there should be a reason you need to cancel your registration\, all fees but a $25 processing fee will be refundable if cancelled by April 1. There are no refunds after April 1. \nCamp is open to youth ages 6-12\, who meet age requirements before the first day of camp. There is a maximum of 50 learners and registration will be processed on a first-come\, first-serve basis. Youth will be broken into smaller groups according to age\, with a minimum ratio of 5:1 youth to adult at all times throughout the week. All adults coming into direct\, regular contact with youth will receive a background check and health/safety training. \nCAMPER EXPECTATIONS: Each camper is expected to meet the following base expectations in order to successfully\, independently attend camp. By submitting your registration\, you affirm that your child(ren) meets these expectations. \nIn appreciation for learners of diverse abilities\, we are happy to explore accommodations and encourage you to reach out if your learner is unable to meet these expectations. \nBase expectations include: \n\nCamper can independently use a public restroom\, and is prepared to use compost toilets (portalettes) provided at the Loretto Motherhouse.\nCamper can stay with a group at all times and follow instructions from an adult group leader.\nCamper does not require medicine to be administered with support (in any form) throughout the duration of camp days (excluding youth who can self administer oral medication labelled and provided to New Pioneers by the first day of camp).\nCamper can speak and understand English.\n\nCamper can physically navigate uneven terrain independently\, without support.\nCamper will be kind\, safe\, and respectful at all times to other campers\, staff\, and residents of the Loretto Motherhouse. “Where the Wild Things Are” Day Camp has a zero tolerance policy for participants hitting\, fighting\, bullying\, issuing verbal threats\, and/or destroying property. Join us Thursday\, May 22nd\, from 5-7 pm at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Campus to get certified to monitor your chosen stream(s)! This training will equip you with all the tools and knowledge you need to become a Salt River Watershed Watch Volunteer. \nInterested samplers must attend an in-person training AND complete online training content to become certified. Join us to hear local composting enthusiasts share their experiences\, expertise\, and tips for creating healthy compost. Meet our guest speakers: \nCole Alexander with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth: Cole currently is part of the grounds team at Nazareth\, leading on-site composting\, and is enrolled in the Regenerative Agriculture Academy. Cole has an extensive background with all things soil\, coining the term\, “Soil Mystic” due to his background stewarding Bernheim’s Edible Garden\, completing the Foundation Series in the Soil Food Web School\, and so much more! \nEvelyn Spencer with the Washington County Public Library: Eve Spencer is an artist\, a writer\, and a librarian. She has been growing some of her own vegetables\, herbs\,and fruits since childhood. DESCRIPTION:Happy Earth Day! New Pioneers is thrilled to honor Earth Day 2024 by reviving our annual Earth Day Cleanup Challenge\, in which we host a window of time for groups and individuals to “clean up” our local communities. Participating in a clean up is especially relevant this year\, as Earth Day 2024’s theme is “planet vs plastics”. We can’t wait for you to join us in cleaning up our environment to ensure a healthy future for all! \nGuidelines\nNew Pioneers’ Earth Day Cleanup Challenge is a collective challenge\, meaning that groups and individuals are encouraged to host their own cleanup events throughout the central Kentucky region during the week surrounding Earth Day: Saturday\, April 20 through Sunday\, April 28\, 2024. New Pioneers’ defines a “cleanup event” as any event that promotes environmental restoration or quality maintenance\, including\, but not limited to\, trash and litter collection\, invasive species removal\, and water(source) cleanups. \nIn order to participate in the challenge\, we invite you to submit information about yourself/your team using this form. Additionally\, we ask that you send confirmation in the form of updates and photos from your successful cleanup event to info@newpioneers.org by Tuesday\, April 30\, 2024\, regardless of your cleanup date. \nTo celebrate your commitment to protecting the environment\, eligible participants* will be entered into a raffle to win a Go Sun® solar oven. DESCRIPTION:New Pioneers invites our members\, friends\, donors\, and community to attend our annual Empty Bowl Supper on Friday\, February 23\, 2024 from 5:30-8 p.m. This event is New Pioneers' sole fundraiser that supports our work throughout the year ahead! \nRegister for the 2024 Empty Bowl Supper today! \nIn this evening of "connection\, collaboration\, and celebration"\, our community comes together to enjoy a wide selection of home cooked soups and stews and to celebrate local artists\, performers\, and potters. Donations are encouraged upon entry\, with a recommended amount of $30.00 per attendee. Recommended dress is casual to elevated casual. \nThis year\, New Pioneers is thrilled to formally roll out our 2024-2026 Strategic Plan through conversation and collaboration at our Empty Bowl Supper. We're also excited to host the first\, inaugural "Pioneer Awards" to honor four unique individuals\, projects\, and businesses making a positive impact in our communities. \nWe invite you to join us for a night of fun\, food\, and revelry in support of sustainability! \nPlease note that an event like Empty Bowl Supper requires many hands and much love!
